These songs have all but been deleted from the Yearout Family repertoire. At Gaylen Houser's request, on December 3, 2013, Don (Bass) and Ginger (Tenor) Yearout, Ken Howard (Baritone) and Marc Yearout (Lead) recorded them for posterity. These recordings were intended just as rough takes that we could come back and polish up later; but sadly, Don fell into ill health and the opportunity was lost. In hindsight, I wish I would have kept the recorder going to capture all the chatter and rehearsals... more of the true experience all we Yearout children grew up with. Oh well... at least we have this record.Â
NOTE: The photo is one of the original Yearout quartets who sang these songs. L-R: Leon, Jack, Speed & Leroy Yearout
In the early years of the 20th Century, SL Yearout was a news writer and typesetter for the Wapato Independent. Luckily for us, he preserved much of his wit and wisdom in a scrapbook that has somehow survived being passed around from family to family and enjoyed for well over 70 years.
This is a rare recording of Speed Yearout reciting "Face on the Bar Room Floor" and other classics including "The Prohibitionist" and "The Hop Head."
At nearly every family gathering, at some point Grandpa Speed would be cajoled into reciting a few of his favorite poems without much arm twisting and much to Hazels chagrin. At the end of this tape, you will hear her exclaim, "Are you doing that again?"
Barbershop quartet singing and dancing the buck and wing were always included too. It was a good time to grow up in the Speed and Hazel Yearout Family.
